The entrance examinations to the class 2022-2024 took place in June 2022.
Below, you can see the program and requirements for the examination.

Submission
The online application is closed.
Applications were made online through this website, and should include the following content:
- One digital video recording with the candidate playing an instrument or singing (with or without accompaniment).
The video should fulfill the following requirements:- Candidate must be clearly identifiable.
- The sound must be of sufficient quality for the pre-jury to evaluate the applicant´s performance.
- Videos with very low sound quality will be discarded.
- The videos must be viewable online (preferably via Vimeo or YouTube) via links.
- The video must have a length of at least 5 minutes and should not be longer than 10 minutes
- High res photo
- Biography of minimum 600 and maximum 1000 characters
Scan of passport or ID card or equivalent proof of age is to be submitted after the Online pre-selection, and only by the 14-20 applicants, that are invited to Copenhagen.
All applications will be reviewed by the pre-jury and treated as confidential. Malko Academy for Young Conductors reserves the right to request additional information from or about an applicant. In the online preliminary round the pre-jury will choose between 14 and 20 young conductors to participate in the application rounds 1-4 in Copenhagen. Expenses for hotel accommodation will be refunded with up to 650 DKK per relevant night upon receipt. Travel expenses for travel to the entrance examination will not be refunded. The result of the preliminary round will be announced on June 27th 2022 and all applicants will be notified by e-mail.
Recording/photography
All application rounds may be recorded and/or photographed for use during the application process e.g. in order to review a performance in the subsequent jury-discussion. No recording will be published, but photos might be published on social media to inform about the ongoing application rounds.
Entrance examination
To be accepted to Malko Academy for Young Conductors you will - after having applied online - have to pass an entrance examination consisting of the following five rounds:

12:00-12:30 (Copenhagen time)
Online pre-selection:
Online test in music theory and aural skills. Applicants receive an email at 12:00 (Copenhagen time), linking to an online test. Applicants will have 30 minutes to finish the test.
On basis of the test, but primarily the application material, the 14-20 most qualified applicants will be selected and invited to the examination in June.

Written test in music theory and aural skills. Duration: 1 hour.

Individual oral test in music theory and aural skills. Duration: 10 minutes.

Entrance examination, round 3:
1. Performance of a piece for solo instrument or voice by the applicant´s own choice. Duration: 5-10 minutes.
2. Performance of a piece for solo piano by the applicant´s own choice. Duration: 5 minutes. (For pianists, who already played solo piano at no.1, this second piece shall be omitted).
3. Piano sight reading exercise

Please note: As soon as the jury has a clear impression of the applicant, his/her performance of the pieces for instrument/voice will be interrupted.

Voting procedure:
The procedure follows these steps:
1. Applicants are ranked in order of total points.
2. The ranked list of applicants will be discussed and a decision will be made about how many applicants (min. 8, max. 12) should continue to round 4. The "cut" is made in that place between 8-12 candidates where the difference in overall performance is clearest.
Jury round 3: Henrik Vagn Christensen (conductor and teacher in Malko Academy), Kasper Lykke Hedegaard (ear training teacher in Malko Academy), Ole Faurschou (conductor and teacher in Malko Academy), Per Friman (musician, DNSO) and Poul Emborg (chorus master DRCC).
Applicants will be informed about the results via mail and SMS. The decision of the jury is final and cannot be appealed. Malko Academy shall not provide feedback on the decisions.

Entrance examination, round 4:
1. Conducting a string orchestra in 1st movement of Antonin Dvorak, Serenade for Strings in E, Op.22.
2. Conducting a small orchestra in a new piece, composed especially for this application round. The score will be handed to the applicant approx. 24 hours in advance.
3. Conducting an 13-person-choir in Edvard Grieg, Ave Maris Stella.
After having performed in round 4, applicants can travel home and do not need to stay for the results from the voting procedure. Those will be announced via mail on Monday.

1. Applicants are ranked in order of total points given in round 4.
2. The ranked list of applicants will be discussed and a decision will be made about which (approximately) six applicants shall be invited to join Malko Academy for Young Conductors.
